Workday, Inc. (WDAY)
Software / Cloud / IA empresarial
Workday is the leading platform for people and finance management for large organizations, with a GAAP operating margin still compressed by stock-based compensation; at 69× on today's operating profit, the market is paying for a margin expansion that the company's own guidance is already starting to confirm, and at +6% expected return the stock trades Fairly valued.

The essentials
- More than 11,500 customers, over 65% of the Fortune 500, and 12-month subscription backlog growing 16% year over year.
- The GAAP operating margin (10.4% over the trailing twelve months) is compressed by stock-based compensation equal to 16% of revenue, but that compensation has been declining in relative weight each year.
- No dividend: the company returns cash exclusively through buybacks, which accelerated markedly in the most recent quarter.
- Current guidance reiterates subscription revenue of $9,925-9,950 million for fiscal 2027 and raises guided non-GAAP operating margin to 30.5%.
- The stock trades 31% below its 52-week high, in part due to the growth deceleration from high double digits to the guided 12-13%.
Intrinsic value — two valuation methods
The methods disagree: one places the value today above the price ($195) and the other below.
Pillars of the analysis
The verdict — today vs 5 years
Today — fairly valued: at $195 trades ~5.2% below its value discounted to today (~$205); the discount is positive but does not reach the margin of safety we require (≥38%).
At 5 years — En valor: the target price ($256) plus dividends yield between the 4% floor and the 10% average return — a reasonable return, though without the margin of a great investment.
The bridge: the return at 5 years exceeds the risk-free rate (4.5%) — but the discount does not reach the required margin of safety (≥38%). To require a 15% annual return, it would need to be bought at ~$127.
Thesis
The business
Workday is a capital-light, subscription business, with a moat built on switching costs and an installed base of over 65% of the Fortune 500. The quality of the business is good, not exceptional: the current return on invested capital is around 13%, above the 10% bar but without the margin of a top-tier compounder, largely because GAAP operating profit is still compressed by stock-based compensation.
The valuation
It is valued by EV/NOPAT (net operating profit after tax), the metric that fully expenses stock-based compensation — necessary in a business where that expense equals 16% of revenue. The 5-year value comes from projecting revenue off the company's current guidance, with an operating margin that expands gradually as stock-based compensation loses relative weight, and an exit multiple of 23x on that operating profit, within the 20-30x band that applies to quality enterprise software.
The margin of safety
At market price, the expected 5-year return is +6%, the result of a It trades close to intrinsic value, far from the required margin of safety.. Today's price already reflects much of the guided deceleration; what is not as clearly priced in is whether the margin expansion holds up beyond the guided horizon.
What to watch
The disconfirming case for this thesis is twofold: subscription growth settling below the guided 12% (which would leave Workday without the scale needed to dilute stock-based compensation), or generic artificial intelligence agents beginning to substitute specific functionality before Workday consolidates its own agent offering.
