Kroger (KR)
Distribución minorista de alimentos
The largest supermarket chain in the United States trades near its 52-week low and at a multiple well below its specialty-retail peer band, following a $2,500 million impairment charge in its automated fulfillment network and a leadership transition. The grocery business generates thin but very stable margins, and a high-margin retail media business (Kroger Precision Marketing) is growing strongly within the same balance sheet. There is a margin of safety: the market's perception is meaningfully worse than reality.

The essentials
- Trades near its 52-week low following a $2,500 million accounting impairment charge in the fulfillment network, not because of lost market share.
- Kroger Precision Marketing (retail media) contributed $1,500 million of operating income in the last fiscal year and is growing more than 20% year over year.
- Very active share buybacks ($2,700 million in the last year, close to 7% of market value), accreting per-share value at a depressed price.
Intrinsic value — two valuation methods
Total return at 5 years: 17.3%/year = 14.7% appreciation + 2.6% dividend. The target price ($115) is ex-dividend; the $10 in dividends collected over 5 years are added separately.
By both methods, the value today (DCF $137 · Multiples $101) exceeds the market price ($58).
Pillars of the analysis
The verdict — today vs 5 years
Today — with margin of safety: at $58 trades ~42.5% below its value discounted to today (~$101) — the wide discount we require (≥38%, equivalent to a ~15% annual return); the risk is covered by the margin, not the rate.
At 5 years — Muy infravalorado: the target price ($115) plus dividends yield above the required average return (10%) — the business compounds.
The bridge: the return at 5 years comfortably exceeds the risk-free rate (4.5%) — and the discount reaches the required margin of safety.
Thesis
The business
A national-scale supermarket with thin but very stable operating margins (adjusted operating income around 3.3% of sales), plus a high-margin retail media business scaling within the same balance sheet. The moat is narrow — the store next door sets the price — but real: purchase data from 63 million households, sourcing scale and private label.
The valuation
It is valued at 12× on adjusted net income, the thin-margin specialty-retail method from the §4 band. The base case projects adjusted earnings out five years and applies a multiple of 9×, near the floor of the band since it is the thinnest-margin family in the group. That yields a value of $115 per share and a +17% annual return at market price.
The margin of safety
At a market price of $58, There is a margin of safety: the market's perception is meaningfully worse than reality. The discount stems from a one-time accounting charge (the fulfillment network impairment) and uncertainty over the new CEO, not from a structural loss of market share: identical sales accelerated and the retail media business is growing strongly.
What to watch
The central disconfirmer is agentic AI shopping: if it disintermediates Kroger from the direct customer relationship, it weakens the data asset that underpins both loyalty and Kroger Precision Marketing. In the near term, watch whether identical sales excluding fuel hold within the guided range of 1.0%-2.0% and whether the new CEO improves operating leverage without sacrificing price investment.
