Qualcomm (QCOM)
Semiconductores — comunicaciones inalámbricas y licenciamiento de patentes
Two businesses on one balance sheet: a fabless semiconductor franchise losing its largest customer to vertical integration, and an ultra-high-margin royalty stream on standard-essential patents that no longer grows. At $161 per share the market pays 20× and discounts that the handset transition won't be offset by automotive, IoT, and data centers. It trades close to intrinsic value, far from the required margin of safety.

The essentials
- Sum of the parts: QCT, fabless semiconductors with a 26% pretax margin in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, and QTL, standard-essential patent royalties with a 69% margin and minimal capital.
- The path starts from the company's guidance for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026: revenue of $9.7 to 10.5 billion against $11.27 billion in the comparable quarter, i.e., a year of contraction.
- The annual report states that Apple is expected to increasingly use its own modems, with a significant negative impact on QCT; handsets fell 20% year over year in the quarter.
- Automotive grew 61% year over year and has posted 23 consecutive quarters of double-digit growth; together with IoT they grew a combined 28%.
- It returns more than its free cash flow over the last twelve months: buybacks of $9.25 billion plus dividends of $3.83 billion —$13.1 billion— against free cash flow of $10.4 billion, 126%; in fiscal 2025 the return was 98% of the flow ($12.6 billion over $12.8 billion).
Intrinsic value — two valuation methods
Total return at 5 years: 7.2%/year = 4.8% appreciation + 2.4% dividend. The target price ($203) is ex-dividend; the $21 in dividends collected over 5 years are added separately.
By both methods, the value today (DCF $215 · Multiples $182) exceeds the market price ($161).
Pillars of the analysis
The verdict — today vs 5 years
Today — fairly valued: at $161 trades ~11.6% below its value discounted to today (~$182); the discount is positive but does not reach the margin of safety we require (≥38%).
At 5 years — En valor: the target price ($203) plus dividends yield between the 4% floor and the 10% average return — a reasonable return, though without the margin of a great investment.
The bridge: the return at 5 years exceeds the risk-free rate (4.5%) — but the discount does not reach the required margin of safety (≥38%). To require a 15% annual return, it would need to be bought at ~$115.
Thesis
The business
Qualcomm combines an extraordinary-margin, minimal-capital standard-essential patent licensing franchise with a fabless semiconductor business that returns on capital well above the 10% bar (25.8% on the balance sheet's invested capital). The quality of the return is not in question; what is in question is the durability of volume. The handset line, which accounted for 63% of fiscal 2025 revenue, faces modem insourcing by its largest customer, and the annual report itself states this as a significant negative impact.
The valuation
It is valued by sum of the parts on NOPAT, because QCT and QTL are distinct economics: 19 times for the semiconductor business, within its archetype's band and near the floor for cyclicality and customer concentration, and 17 times for the royalty stream, which merits a premium for near-zero incremental invested capital but a discount for zero growth and renewal risk. The weighted result supports a value of $203 per share at five years, against a quoted price of $161, equivalent to +7% annually including the dividend.
The margin of safety
It trades close to intrinsic value, far from the required margin of safety. The adverse scenario —Apple completes the transition, China stays weak, and the margin doesn't recover— yields +7% annually; the favorable scenario, where the inflection in non-handset revenue that the company announced at its investor day materializes, yields +7%. Requiring 15% annually would require buying below -40%. The width of the range is the data point: the outcome depends on a transition whose ending is not yet in the numbers.
What to watch
The disconfirmer is QCT's handset line quarter by quarter. If the 20% year-over-year decline in the third quarter of fiscal 2026 deepens without automotive, IoT, and data centers offsetting it, the revenue path fails to return to growth and the multiple isn't sustained. The second indicator is gross margin: the company stated it is passing the industry-wide increase in input costs through to prices and expects a margin benefit as price changes take effect. If it doesn't materialize, the margin recovery assumed in the base case doesn't happen.
